CASE STUDY: CHECKED

DURATION: 1 week (alongside a full time job)
Completed in October 2022

ABOUT

This case study was given as homework for the recruitment process of a job I applied for. The problem and the solution were defined in the design brief, and the user journey was also given. The design of the homepage and statistics screens was requested in one week delivery time.

SUMMARY

Since this was a one-week homework, I did a quick research on habit tracker apps to have an idea and gave the app a name, “Checked”, to make it more relatable. I expand the given user journey as a result of my research. After playing with some ideas, I had low fidelity wireframes for 3 screens. Then I created a moodboard & designed an app logo before jumping into the final design.

DESIGN BRIEF

TARGET USERS: The target users of the app consist of ordinary people who want to adopt new habits (such as reading, going to bed early, drinking water more often, walking, cycling, etc.) and follow them regularly.

PROBLEM: Users picture the new habits they want to gain in their minds, and they make an effort to fulfill them, however; in the reality of life, these habits are forgotten in a short time and become unsustainable.

SOLUTION: Users receive support from the app in many ways such as creating habits, following recorded habits, and receiving reminders at desired periods.

01 MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When I read the design brief, I got my first impression of the habit tracker app. I never underestimate these first impressions, which seem to be instinctive but are the quick reaction of our build-up experiences.

I took note of these impressions in order not to lose them in the process.

“Checked” supports the user to create habits, and:

  • should be able to create a continuity with reward systems, challenges or gamification
  • should contain contents that can trigger a sense of accomplishment
  • and the design should be calm and not create a crowded feeling

02 RESEARCH

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

I conducted a quick research to see what the strengths and weaknesses of the most used Habit Tracker Apps.

03 EMPATHIZE

DENIZ’S CHECKED JOURNEY

A user journey is also given with the design brief but I added a few more steps to make sure that nothing is missing with the findings from the research.

1. Deniz downloads Checked to her smartphone.

2. Uses the create a habit button and she finds and selects the habit she wants among the categories.

3. She enters the duration or amount of the habit, the frequency period, the reminder time, and a brief description.

4. She creates her habit by pressing the complete button.

5. By repeating this process, she creates many habits. She views these habits as a list, receives reminder notifications, marks a habit completed, and tracks past data and success rates.

+ Instead of creating all her habits one by one, Deniz chooses habits among ready-made suggestions and customize them.

+ Deniz immediately chooses a challenge. She thinks some of these challenges will be good for her.

6. Tracks her progress over time on the statistics page.

7. In summary, Deniz regularly uses Checked to form and maintain habits, gain stability, and feel motivated/happy.
