CASE STUDY: Aura

DURATION: 4 Days
Completed in May 2024

ABOUT

AURA is a purpose-driven menstrual care brand that provides clean, vegan, and affordable products while supporting women’s health and wellbeing.

DESING BRIEF

AURA is developing a mobile app focused on supporting breast self-exams to promote early detection and offer a trusted space for users to take charge of their health. I was asked to envision the design of this app.

SUMMARY

My first instinct was to question the need for a standalone app for a single purpose. Instead, I proposed integrating the breast self-exam as a feature within a broader menstrual and wellness companion app. This would increase engagement, build user trust, and better align with AURA’s holistic approach to care.

I explored solutions under three themes: guidance, motivation, and accessibility. I prioritized ideas that were technically feasible, empowering, and easy to integrate into users’ existing routines.

01
INITIAL THOUGHTS

Nowadays, e-waste is a significant problem. I questioned whether there is a need for an application addressing this issue and whether mobile applications are the best medium for it.

Knowing the importance of the subject, I concluded that it would be more practical to focus this issue as a supporting feature for an application serving different purposes so that it better aligns with AURA’s holistic approach to women’s health & care and it can effectively reach the right audience.

What should the focus of this app be?

  • Completing AURA purchases (shopping for pads/tampons..)
  • Tracking your cycle from various angles (cycle start and end dates, length, various symptoms)
  • How many pads/tampons you used in a cycle
  • Tracking gynecologist appointment information and dates
  • Getting information about women’s health (there is already a monthly e-newsletter)

A quick refresher on breast health

Before proceeding further, I asked Google’s AI model, Gemini, four questions to refresh my knowledge about breast examinations:

  1. Why is a breast exam important?
  2. Who should perform a breast exam?
  3. How often should a breast exam be performed?
  4. How is a breast exam conducted?

The answers I received helped clarify my understanding.

03
DEFINE

PROBLEM 1

Breast examinations, which are critical for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, are not being performed effectively due to users’ lack of sufficient knowledge and skills.

PROBLEM 2

There is no system in place to facilitate and encourage users to perform regular breast examinations.

04
IDEATE

I developed ideas to solve the above problems without labeling them as right or wrong, excessive or insufficient.

Which Ideas Did I Choose and Why?

I made my selection based on three key ideas that emerged during the idea generation process. These ideas were easy to work with and stood out for the following reasons:

  • They are highly feasible from a technical standpoint.
  • They encourage and facilitate users in performing regular breast examinations.
  • They help users develop their knowledge and skills.

05
DESIGN

Color Choices

The brand had a very diverse and vibrant color world. I stayed true to this world and went for simplicity and created a color system.
